As a player, Matt was a highly regarded pitcher from Granite Bay High School where he pitched for some very talented high school teams under head coach Pat Esposito. After Granite Bay Matt played for one season at Sacramento City College for Jerry Weinstein before deciding to transfer to American River where he was a starter for the 2003 squad that went 28-18.
Matt had signed a letter of intent to play at Chico State the next year but decided to sign a professional contract when he was a 31st round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies. After his pro career Matt attended Eastern Oregon University where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Kinesiology.
